Gantry Crane

Description:

A gantry crane is a type of crane mainly used outdoors to handle heavy objects. It has a bridge structure girders supported by legs, which run along tracks or rails, or travel with tires, enabling it to move horizontally over a workspace. These cranes are commonly used in factories, shipyards, construction sites, steel plants, power plant, and ports, etc.​

Types:

According to girder numbers, there are 2 main types:

  1. Single-girder Crane: Has one main horizontal girder and is typically used for lighter loads.

  2. Double-girder Crane: Has two main girders and is designed for heavier loads, offering more stability and a higher lifting capacity.

According to traveling mechanism, there are 3 main types:

  1. Rail-mounted Crane (RMG): Most commonly seen gantry cranes mounted on rails, allowing it to move along a fixed track system.

  2. Rubber-tired Crane (RTG): Mainly used at port terminals for container handling, or at construction sites for handling of precast bridges, sections, heavy equipment, etc.

  3. Portable Gantry Crane: A kind of light crane with Universal casters.

According to different structures, there are 3 main types:

  1. Box-girder Crane: Most commonly seen gantry cranes with main beam made of box-type girders.

  2. Truss-girder Crane: The structure is truss or lattice type girders and legs.

  3. Semi Gantry Crane: With 1 leg traveling on the tracks fixed on the ground, and the other side without leg, just end trucks traveling on the tracks fixed on the wall or workshop support beam.

According to different application, there are many types:

  1. General-purpose Crane: Most commonly seen gantry cranes applicable most of industrial fields such as in factory, plant, construction site, stock yard, etc.

  2. Container Handling Crane: It can a RMG crane and RTG crane used at the container yard or terminals to handle containers.

  3. Shipyard Gantry Crane: or portal crane, Common in shipyards for the construction or maintenance of large vessels.

  4. Metallurgy Plant Gantry Crane: Main used outdoor to handle steel materials.

  5. Construction Gantry Crane: For example for road construction to lift precast bridges, blocks, sections, heavy equipment, tools, etc.

  6. Heavy Duty Gantry Crane: or goliath crane, With capacity more than 500 tons, designed for lifting extremely heavy and oversized loads in aerospace, construction, or heavy equipment manufacturing.
