Steel Wire Rope for Cranes

Description:

The steel wire rope used for cranes are commonly the smooth or galvanized wire ropes with diameters from 6 to 70 mm. The structure can be: 

  • 6-strand wire rope: such as 6×37 structure (moderate flexibility), 6×19 (high strength but poor flexibility, mostly used for cable wind ropes), 6×61 (good flexibility and low strength, suitable for slings).

  • ‌8-strand wire rope: such as 8×K26WS-EPIWRC (special-shaped strand surface contact), the advantages are high breaking force and strong resistance to bending fatigue, recommended for high-efficiency cranes.

  • ‌Rope core type:

    • ‌Hemp core/fiber core (FC): good flexibility, oil-lubricated steel wire, suitable for general environment;

    • ‌Steel core (IWR/IWS): resistant to high temperature and high pressure, strong resistance to extrusion.

How to Choose the Wire Ropes?

  • ​‌Safety factor matching‌

    • Lifting equipment: safety factor ≥5–6 times (such as bridge cranes, tower cranes);

    • Slings/binding: safety factor ≥6–8 times (anti-impact load).

    • Calculation basis: minimum breaking force = maximum load × safety factor.

  • Structure to match working conditions

    • High strength, wear resistance: 6×19

    • Frequent bending (such as lifting mechanism): 6×37 or 6×61

    • Anti-rotation (multi-layer winding): 18×7, 35W×7 multi-layer strand structure

    • High breaking force: 8×K26WS surface contact rope

  • Rope core and coating selection

    • High temperature environment: asbestos core (hemp core is prohibited);

    • Wet/corrosive environment: galvanized rope or plastic-coated rope;

    • Heavy pressure scene: steel core (IWR/IWS);

    • General scene: hemp core (FC, oil-lubricated).

  • Examples

    • High-temperature molten metal lifting: Asbestos core steel wire rope (high temperature resistance ≥ 300℃)

    • Port machinery/frequent amplitude change: 6×37+FC (good flexibility) or 8-strand surface contact rope (fatigue resistance)

    • Precision equipment lifting: Non-metallic coated rope (anti-scratch)

    • Open-air corrosive environment: Galvanized steel wire rope (anti-corrosion grade AB)

    • Inclined shaft winch/heavy load lifting: 6×36WS+IWR (anti-extrusion) or 6×19S+FC (line contact)
