Select Wire Rope Hoist or Chain Hoist?
Quick Selection Rule
For low capacity, limited headroom, workstation lifting, frequent inching & positioning → Electric Chain Hoist
For heavy capacity, high lifting height, overhead/gantry crane continuous heavy duty, long travel → Wire Rope Hoist

Electric Chain Hoist
✅ Advantages
Compact, lightweight, low headroom requirement. Suitable for low workshops and tight spaces. Chain stored in a chain bag, saves side space.
Precise lifting positioning. Ideal for tooling, molds and assembly lines with frequent inching operation.
No rope tangling issue. No damage of rope guide. Chain features good wear resistance and works well under high temperature or mild corrosive environments.
Much smaller dimension at same capacity. Flexible installation, fixed suspension or with trolley available.
❌ Disadvantages
Internal microcracks on chain are hard to detect visually. Periodic NDT inspection is required, making safety check harder.
Higher cost for models above 10 ton. Chain dead weight becomes heavy for large lifting height.
Noise increases under heavy load and long lifting travel.
👉 Application: Mainly 0.5t~10t. Mold handling, machine shop workstation, equipment maintenance, low-height workshop, explosion-proof area, short-stroke frequent lifting.

Wire Rope Hoist (CD/MD traditional type, European wire rope hoist)
✅ Advantages
Wide capacity range from 1 ton up to dozens of tons. Best choice for high lifting height (10+m). Standard for overhead cranes and gantry cranes.
Broken wires can be seen visually. Easy daily inspection; replace rope once broken wires or deformation are found.
Smooth operation for long travel, good performance for continuous heavy-duty handling of steel and heavy cargo.
❌ Disadvantages
Drum structure takes vertical space, higher headroom required (low-headroom version available).
Prone to rope disorder, rope guide vulnerable to damage. Wire rope suffers abrasion, indentation and twisting; regular rope replacement needed.
Large overall size, not suitable for curved monorail.
👉 Application: 3t+, lifting height ≥6m, single girder overhead crane, gantry crane, warehouse heavy material, long-stroke continuous heavy lifting.
Comparison Table
Items | Chain Hoist | Wire Rope Hoist |
Headroom | Low, good for low workshop | High for standard type (low-headroom option) |
Lifting Height | Short & medium stroke; heavy chain self-weight for high lift | Perfect for high lifting & long travel |
Capacity | Common 0.5~10t; high cost for heavy tonnage | 1t ~ dozens of tons, cost-effective for heavy load |
Safety Inspection | Hidden chain cracks hard to see visually | Broken wires & wear visible by naked eye |
Typical Faults | Sprocket & chain wear; no rope tangling risk | Rope disorder, rope guide failure, wire breakage |
Positioning | Better, good for inching adjustment | Smooth for long travel, less precise fine-tuning |
Installation | Small size, compatible with curved track | Large size, mostly for straight I-beam track |
Decision Guide
Capacity ≤5 ton, limited ceiling height, short lifting travel, accurate alignment needed → Chain Hoist
Capacity ≥5 ton, high lifting height, fitted on single-girder overhead crane, continuous heavy duty → Wire Rope Hoist
Outdoor, dusty site, long-distance lifting steel & heavy equipment → Wire rope hoist preferred
Assembly line, mold change, explosion-proof workshop, confined space → Chain hoist preferred
Note: Both types require regular inspection per national standards. NDT test is mandatory for chain hoist periodically. For wire rope hoist, check broken wires, diameter reduction and twisting regularly.
